Announcing the Class of 2008 of the Niagara Track & Field Hall of Fame
The Class of 2008:- Jon P. Anderson is a graduate of Cornell University. Jon was a member of the 1972 US Olympic Team (10,000 meters). He was All-American in 1970 at six miles in a Cornell University record (28:19.8, finished in third place at the NCAA Championships), the 1973 Boston Marathon Champion (2:16:06), and was a member of the 1979 U.S. Cross Country Team that competed in Dusseldorf, Germany. He was the 1970 Heptagonal Cross Country Champion and set four school records at Cornell (3,000 meter steeplechase - 9:00.9, 2 miles indoors - 8:51.5, 6 miles - 28.19.8, and Cross Country at Van Cortlandt Park - 24:39.6). Jon also won the Honolulu Marathon, Wang Australia Marathon, and Antwerp (Belgium) Marathon during his career. His personal best for the marathon is 2:12.03 and for 10,000 meters is 28:34. Jon competed until 1984. He is currently living in Eugene, Oregon.
- Bill Cox is a graduate of Rochester Shop School, Mercersburg Academy (PA), and Penn State University (1929). Bill won a bronze medal at the 1924 Olympic Games as a member of US team that ran the 3,000 meter race. He is a five-time IC4A Champion and three-time Penn Relays Champion. Bill died in Rochester, NY on 03 June 1996.
- Kathy Mills is a graduate of Fayetteville-Manlius High School (1977) and Penn State University (1981). Kathy is four-time National Champion (one AAU and three AIAW), seven-time All American. She set the World Record and US record at 5,000 meters in 1978. She is a three-time winner of the Broderick Award which is presented to the outstanding female athlete in the nation. Kathy is married to Mark Parker and lives in Portland, Oregon.
- Brad Sumner is a graduate of McQuaid Jesuit High School (1989) and Villanova University (1993). Brad was a member of the 1990 NCAA National champion 3200 meters relay team. He is a four-time All-American, six-time Big East Champion, two-time IC4A Champion, and three-time Penn Relays Champion. He ran on four US National Teams and was ranked in the top ten in the US at 800 meters. He broke 4 minutes for the mile in 1995 when he ran 3:59.11 at the Penn Relays. Brad is currently living in Canton, Georgia (near Atlanta).
- Karl Thornton is a graduate of Binghamton High Sschool (1968) and the University of Pennsylvania (1972). Karl is a six-time All-Ivy, two-time All East competitor. He won two Heptagonal Championships and set twelve school records. He was a member of five Heptagonal team champions and three IC4A team champions. Karl ran 3:57.9 for the mile in 1974. He currently lives in Media, PA (near Philadelphia).
- Jerry Riordan of Syracuse NY. Long-time coach of very successful programs at Christian Brothers Academy - Syracuse (1961 to 1981) and Henninger HS (1982 to 2001). His teams at CBA won 42 Central New York Cities League Championships (placed in the top three 49 times) and eight Section III Championships (top three 18 times). At Henninger, his teams won 17 Central New York Cities League Championships and 13 Section III Championships. At CBA, his Cross Country team was the 1974 Eastern States Champion (they were runners-up in four other years), the 1974 New York State team champion, and two-time New York State Inter-Diocesan Team Champions. Jerry is currently enjoying his retirement in Syracuse, NY.
