Abstract: This paper presents a chart that lists the standard training modalities and how to use them when training sprinters. The intensity, training distance, number of repetitions per set, number of sets, total distance to be used for the training unit, and the rest to be used are presented for each training modality. This paper is a must have for every coach. The paper was originally published on DrTrack.com in December 2001. It was transferred to and republished by Glass Dragon Digital Publishing in February 2007.

Cedric Walker
Cedric E. Walker

Cedric Walker, a Rochester, NY native, earned a Bachelor fo Science degree in History in 1987 and a Master of Science degree in Secondary Education in 1995 at the State University of New York at Brockport. He has worked as a Secondary Social Studies Teacher in the Rochester (NY) City School District since 1989.

Walker was a co-founder of Flower City Track Club, Rochester, NY in 1986 and has served as the head coach since then. The Flower City Track Club has produced over 121 high school and college All-Americans and a multitude of national and international champions, including 1996 Olympic Games silver medalist, Kim Batten, two-time NCAA champion, Michael Ford of Baylor University, NCAA record holder Jarmeine Holloway of TCU, and former U.S. hammer and weight throw record holder Sonja Fitts.

Walker was Assistant Boys Outdoor Track and Field Coach at Benjamin Franklin High School (Rochester, NY). During his tenure, his team seventeen New York State Championships, set four New York State records, won three National championships and one Penn Relay Championships.

Walker has been a clinician at a number of clinics and has written a number of articles, many of which are available on this web site.

In addition to coaching, he has served as an adminstrator for the sport. His administrative assignments include: Meet Director USA-Canada Junior Meet, University of Buffalo (1994); President, USATF Niagara Association (1996-2000); Member, Board of Directors, National Scholastic Sports Foundation (NSSF) (2003-Present); Director, adidas Youth Clinic, Raleigh, NC (2003-Present); Nike Sprint Clinic Co-Director (2003-Present); and USATF National Relay Manager (2004-2006).

Walker has served on the national staff for a number of track and field teams including USATF Pool Manager, IAAF World Indoor Championships (Moscow, Russia, 2006); USATF Pool Manager, IAAF World Outdoor Championships (Helsinki, Finland, 2005); USATF Logistics, Olympic Games (Athens Greece, 2004); USATF National Relay Coach, NACAC 23-under Championships (Canada, 2004); USATF National Relay Coach, World Junior Championships (Italy, 2004); USATF Assistant Coach, World Indoor Championships, (Hungary, 2004); USATF Assistant Coach, World Outdoor Championships (France, 2003); USATF Assistant Coach, World Junior Championships (Jamaica, 2002); and USATF Assistant Coach, World University Games (Buffalo, NY, 1993).

He was also honored as 1993 USWTCA Coach of the Year.
